Kitesurfing and wingfoiling
When is the best time to kitesurf or wingfoil in Cumbuco?
Cumbuco has good wind for both kitesurfing and wingfoiling for most of the year. The main season is July to January, with the strongest and most reliable wind from August to November. In that season the trade wind blows on more than 90% of days, usually 15 to 25 knots with stronger days above 30, side-onshore from the east-southeast. It typically picks up late morning and builds through the afternoon. February to June is the lighter, less regular season, good for wingfoil and bigger kites. Daytime temperatures sit around 28°C all year and the water is warm enough to ride without a wetsuit.
What kite sizes should I bring to Cumbuco?
For Cumbuco’s July to January season, bring kites between 8 and 13 m², the range the Windtown kite school recommends for most riders. Lighter riders and windier days call for 8 to 9 m², heavier riders and lighter afternoons for 12 to 13 m². In the February to June season a bigger kite or a foil helps on lighter days. Prefer to travel light? Windtown Beach Hotel rents kites and boards on the beach: kite equipment from R$339 for up to 2 hours or R$424 per day.
Can I launch and land my kite right in front of Windtown?
Yes. At Windtown Beach Hotel in Cumbuco you launch and land on the beach directly in front of the hotel, where the water is wide and less crowded than the beach by the village centre. A grass area keeps your kite clean of sand while you rig, and the kite school team helps with setup, launching, landing and packing up. A guest called that help “a game changer”.
What kite facilities does Windtown have?
Windtown Beach Hotel in Cumbuco gives every guest a personal locker for kite gear close to the beach, included in the room rate. Next to it are a fresh-water rinse for boards, bars and lines, a compressor for pumping kites, and a grass area for rigging. The kite school repairs kites on site, rents kites, boards and harnesses, and helps with launching and landing. Windtown has run its kite and wing centre in Cumbuco since 2001.
Does Windtown have a kite school, and how much are lessons?
Windtown Beach Hotel in Cumbuco has its own IKO-certified kite school on the beach in front of the hotel, running since 2001. 2026 prices including equipment: 10-hour beginner course R$2,800, 6-hour intermediate course R$1,785, private lesson R$350 per hour, 1-hour taster R$175. With your own gear, a private lesson is R$245 and supervision R$140 per hour. Instructors teach in Portuguese, English, Spanish and Dutch. Book with the kite school on WhatsApp: +55 85 8957 8933.
Is Cumbuco good for beginners, and how long does it take to learn?
Cumbuco is one of Brazil’s best-known places to learn kitesurfing thanks to its steady trade wind and warm water, and at Windtown Beach Hotel beginners learn right in front of the hotel. Most beginners take the 10-hour course (R$2,800 with equipment), spread over several days depending on the wind. It covers safety, kite control, body-dragging and your first rides on the board. Bring sunscreen, a lycra and sunglasses, and be comfortable in the water. Prefer flat water? Lessons at Cauípe Lagoon can be arranged, with the buggy at R$100 each way.
Can I kite to Cauípe Lagoon or do downwinders from Windtown?
Yes. Cauípe Lagoon lies about 6 km downwind of Cumbuco, roughly a 45-minute downwinder for confident riders. The lagoon has flat, shallow fresh water, popular for freestyle and progression, and is quietest on weekdays. Windtown Beach Hotel arranges a buggy for R$100 each way, so you can ride down and get a lift back with your gear, or go by buggy both ways. Book it with the kite school on WhatsApp: +55 85 8957 8933.
Kitesurf or wingfoil: which should I learn first at Windtown?
Windtown Beach Hotel in Cumbuco teaches both, and which one you’ll enjoy more is personal: some people fall for kitesurfing, others for wingfoiling. The easiest way to find out is a taster class, with all equipment included: a 1-hour kitesurf taster costs R$175 and a 1-hour wingfoil taster R$390. Try one or both, then carry on with a course: the 10-hour kitesurf beginner course is R$2,800, the 8-hour wingfoil course R$2,995 private or R$2,200 per person shared. Book with the kite school on WhatsApp: +55 85 8957 8933.

Cumbuco and booking direct
Cumbuco or Jericoacoara for a kite trip?
Cumbuco is the easier trip: it lies about 30 km from Fortaleza airport, while Jericoacoara is around 280 km away, a 4 to 5 hour transfer that ends on sand tracks. Both share the July to January wind season. Cumbuco suits learners and riders who want to kite straight from their hotel, with the ocean beach plus Cauípe Lagoon nearby. Jericoacoara is more remote, with lagoons and downwinders that need transport. Many kiters combine both, starting at Windtown Beach Hotel in Cumbuco and finishing in Jeri.
What is there to do in Cumbuco besides kitesurfing?
The sand dunes start about 200 m behind Windtown Beach Hotel, perfect for sunset walks and sandboarding. The hotel arranges buggy tours (2.5 hours, R$500 per buggy), quad tours (1.5 hours, R$200) and horse riding along the beach and lagoons (1 hour, R$120 per person). At the hotel spa, a 60-minute relaxing massage is R$180 and a sports massage R$190.
