The short answer: stay on the beachfront, a short walk outside the village centre, so you can launch from your door on a quieter stretch of sand and still walk to dinner. Cumbuco’s beach runs for more than 5 km, and where you stay along it decides how much of your trip you spend riding instead of carrying gear.

We have taught kitesurfing since 2001 and built our hotel and kite center on this beach in 2004, so this guide is the advice we give friends: which part of Cumbuco to pick, what type of place suits which trip, and what a kiter should check before booking. We will also tell you where we fit, and when somewhere else might suit you better.

Which part of Cumbuco should you stay in?
For most kiters, the best base is on the beach within about a kilometre of the village centre. You get space on the water and a short walk to restaurants.
Cumbuco is a small fishing village about 30 km from Fortaleza airport, with the beach on one side and sand dunes on the other. In season, from July to January, a south-easterly trade wind blows cross to cross-onshore from the right, and the dunes behind the village help it along. In practice you have three choices:
| Area | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Village centre | Restaurants, bars and shops on your doorstep; no car needed | The busiest stretch of beach, with more boats, swimmers and kites; many places are set back from the sand |
| Beachfront, just outside the centre | Launching from your door, more room on the water, a walk into the village | Fewer options, so the good ones book up early for August to December |
| Near Cauípe lagoon | Flat-water freestyle every day | About 6 km from the village, few facilities, and the lagoon gets crowded in peak season |
Our advice: stay on the beachfront and treat Cauípe as a day trip. It is a short buggy or taxi ride, or a downwinder along the beach, and you come home to more choice in the evening.
Hotel, pousada or apartment?
The right type depends mostly on how long you stay and who you travel with. A hotel suits a short trip, an apartment suits a week or more, and a pousada suits a budget.
| Type | Best for | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kite hotel | 1 to 7 nights, couples, first kite trips | Breakfast, daily cleaning, often a kite school on site | Less space, and you eat out every meal |
| Pousada (guesthouse) | Solo travellers, tighter budgets | Simple rooms, breakfast, a local host | Usually not on the beach, and gear storage varies |
| Apartment | A week or longer, families, groups of friends | A full kitchen, a living room and space to spread out | Fewer services unless the building is linked to a hotel |
| Hostel | Backpackers, meeting other kiters | A dorm or private room, a shared kitchen | Little privacy, rarely beachfront |
| All-inclusive resort | Non-kiting family members | Pools, meals, entertainment | Built for families rather than kiters; check the walk to the launch |
If you are staying ten days or more, the kitchen alone tends to decide it. Cooking breakfast and a few dinners yourself saves money, and a living room matters on the days the wind takes a break.
What should a kiter check before booking?
Ask these six questions before you book anywhere in Cumbuco. A listing that says “near the beach” can mean a 10-minute walk with a board bag.
- How far is the launch? “Beachfront” should mean you can rig on the sand in front of the building.
- Where does my gear live? Look for lockers or a gear room, plus somewhere to rinse and dry kites. Wet kites in a bedroom are no fun.
- Is there start and landing help? On a busy beach, a team that launches and lands your kite saves time and stress.
- Can I get lessons or rental on site? Even experienced riders break lines or want to try a different size.
- What is the cancellation policy? The wind is reliable in season, but plans change. A free cancellation window gives you room.
- Is the village walkable? You will be tired after a session. A short walk to dinner beats a taxi every night.
Where Windtown fits
Windtown is a boutique beach hotel and 12 apartments side by side on the beachfront, 800 m from the village centre, sharing one IKO-certified Kite & Wingfoil school on a quieter stretch of the kite beach. Every room and apartment faces the ocean.
Choose the Windtown Beach Hotel if you are here for a week or less, travelling as a couple or solo, or want everything taken care of:
- Twin, double and quadruple rooms, all with breakfast and daily cleaning
- The restaurant and beach bar on the deck, serving breakfast through to dinner and cocktails, with a view of the kiters
- A spa for massages after a session, a pool and free high-speed wifi
- Regular evenings like sushi nights, fish barbecues on the beach and sundowners
Choose Windtown Apartments Cumbuco if you are staying longer, travelling as a family or group, or like to cook:
- 1-bedroom (57.70 m², sleeps 1 to 2), 2-bedroom (99 m², sleeps 3 to 4) and 3-bedroom (120 m², sleeps 5 to 6)
- A full kitchen, a living area and a sea-facing terrace in every apartment
- Gear lockers, a shared rooftop terrace, and an infinity pool and private gym exclusively for apartment guests
- Reduced weekly and monthly rates for longer kite trips and remote workers

Whichever you choose, you get the same beach, the same Kite & Wingfoil school with rental and start and landing help, and the hotel restaurant and spa. Apartment guests can add breakfast and daily cleaning on request. In the apartments, check-in is from 2pm and cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival.
When we are not the right fit. If you want the strongest wind and waves, the coast further north (Taiba, Paracuru and beyond) blows harder. If you only want flat water, you may prefer to stay near a lagoon. And if budget comes first, a pousada in the village will cost less.
