The short answer: choose Cumbuco if you want the easiest trip, lessons and a mix of ocean and flat-water lagoon, 30 km from Fortaleza airport. Choose Jericoacoara for stronger wind, remote dune scenery and a lively village, if you can spend 4 to 5 hours getting there. Choose Taiba for a quieter base with more waves and a smaller, less crowded lagoon. Many kiters do two of the three in one trip.

When is Cumbuco the better choice?
Cumbuco is the easiest kite trip in Ceará. You can land in Fortaleza and be on the beach within an hour, which matters on a one or two-week holiday.
- Learning or improving: the steady side-onshore wind and warm water make it one of Brazil’s best-known places to learn. Most schools teach right on the beach, and Cauípe lagoon offers flat, shallow water nearby.
- Variety without travel: ocean riding in front of your door, Cauípe for flat water, and downwinders north along the coast.
- Families and mixed groups: the dunes, buggy tours, horse riding and restaurants keep non-kiters busy.
The honest downside: Cumbuco is busier than spots further north, especially in front of the village centre and on the lagoon in peak season. Staying on a quieter stretch of beach makes a big difference.
When is Jericoacoara the better choice?
Jericoacoara, or Jeri, is the famous one: a car-free village between dunes and the sea, about 280 km north-west of Fortaleza.
- More wind: the wind generally gets stronger the further north you go along the coast.
- Scenery and atmosphere: huge dunes, sunset on the big dune and a busy nightlife.
- Lagoons and downwinders: spots such as Preá nearby, and lagoons that are best reached by buggy or 4×4.
The honest downsides: the transfer from Fortaleza takes 4 to 5 hours, with the last part on sand tracks. There is a regional airport near Cruz, around 30 to 40 minutes from the village, but flight connections vary by season. Many kite spots need transport, which adds up on a longer stay.
When is Taiba the better choice?
Taiba is a small village north of Cumbuco, about 73 km and around 1.5 hours by car from Fortaleza airport.
- Waves: the ocean in front of Taiba usually has bigger waves than Cumbuco, which wave riders and wingfoilers love.
- Fewer people: the village is quieter, and the Taiba lagoon is smaller and usually less crowded than Cauípe.
- A little more wind than Cumbuco on most days.
The honest downsides: there are fewer restaurants and services, the ocean is not as easy for beginners, and you will want a car or buggy to get around.
Can you combine them?

Yes, and many kiters do. A popular plan is to start in Cumbuco for a few days to get your legs back and enjoy the comfort, then head north, by road or on a guided downwinder, and finish in Jericoacoara.
If you are learning, spend your first week in Cumbuco. If you are an experienced rider with two weeks or more, a split trip gives you the best of both.
Our honest recommendation
- First kite trip or a course: Cumbuco
- One week, any level: Cumbuco, maybe with a day trip to Taiba or Paracuru
- Two weeks or more, intermediate or better: start in Cumbuco, finish in Jericoacoara
- Wave riding and peace and quiet: Taiba
- Strongest wind and big downwinders: Jericoacoara and the coast further north
